KD Kelley, the point leader at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, FL returned to action this past Saturday night after losing out the week before to Mother Nature. His fourth place finish in the feature increased his performance indicator average to 3.1506. Kelley also has the highest average among all of the drivers competing for the championship.
Jimmy Mullins sits second in the east point standings with a performance indicator of 2.8549. He won the first feature this past Saturday night by holding off Rodney Cook for the win that had the fans on their feet throughout the first of two feature events at Franklin County Speedway in Callaway, VA. But finished 11th after the two made contact in the second feature, causing him to pit with a flat left front tire.
Mullins currently holds a two-point lead over Rick Sigmon in the point standings. Sigmon actually has the second highest performance indicator in the East with 2.8788. But, in order for Sigmon to have a chance at the ASA Championship, he must also be the track champion. The National Champion is determined by those who won their track championship as well as having the highest performance indicator.
Last week, Cary Stapp fell out of the top spot in the West Region due to a rainout at Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle, TX allowing Gary Madsen from Rocky Mountain Raceway in West Valley City, UT to take over the top spot.
But, with Stapp picking up the feature win this past Saturday night, he was able to catapult himself over Madsen back to the top of the West standings with a performance indicator of 2.7028. Stapp currently has a comfortable 104-point lead over Duane Toyne in the point standings.
Madsen finished seventh in his feature event at Rocky Mountain last Saturday night. He currently has a 73-point lead over Michael Hale in the point standings.
Ironically, Hale actually has the highest performance indicator in the West with an average of 2.7380. But, again, he needs to get past Madsen in the Rocky Mountain points in order to have his shot at the championship which includes a test session with Joe Gibbs Racing.
