Chris Steele Wins With Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil
RICHBURG, SC (May 10th, 2008) - Chris and the guys made their way over to I-77 Speedway for their big money race on Saturday with the Crate Late Model. With a bigger purse on the line, this event brought in some of the area’s heaviest hitters from both Carolina’s. Chris had another lucky pill draw as he got to start outside pole in the first of two-heat/qualifying races of the evening. Chris jumped out front in the 8-lap heat race and never looked back, earning the inside pole position for the main event. A field of 19 cars started the main event with Chris jumping out front on the first start, only to be slowed by a caution flag for the outside pole starter Jon Thornburg. On the next double file start, Chris found himself with Buddy Smith starting outside pole as Thornburg was unable to continue. Just last week Chris finished behind Smith at Carolina Speedway for their big money race event, so he knew Buddy would be tough to beat. As they took the green flag, Smith leaped into the lead, only to be foiled by another yellow flag before a lap was complete. Track rules state after two double file starts with no lap being completed, the field will be lined up single file. This put Chris in the lead, which he never relinquished during the entire event. He had a hard charging Johnny Pursley right in his tracks, but was never seriously challenged. Chris was quoted after the race saying, “I knew Johnny was in second and has a real fast car, but I ran my line, raced the track and never seen him beside me” he added “We had the same set-up from last week at Carolina when we were so fast and it proved to be good here too”. Smith suffered mechanical problems while in third mid-race. Pursley, Owen Osteen, Chris Cantrell and Ross Bailes followed Steele to the line. Look for Steele and crew back at Carolina Speedway next Friday night with the Renegade car and Harris Speedway on Saturday night with the Crate Late Model.
